It’s bad enough having them, but just what causes panic attacks?

‘The word panic derives from the name of the Greek God Pan, who was said to have the ability to cause extreme, irrational fear, especially in lonely or open places’
So when you are in a state of panic it is understandable that you are feeling fearful.
Panic, to me also suggests that the fear has come on quickly; because this sort of fear by definition makes us feel ‘panicky.’
If someone became gradually fearful of a situation or event then there’d be opportunity to intercept the feeling & stop the panic from coming on. So, we can conclude that a panic attack is an irrational, extreme fear that comes on very quickly & without warning.
At times it is a very good thing that we have the capability to panic, especially when we are faced with danger or life-threatening situations.
But this is where the problem really starts.
As human beings we’ve evolved to such a sophisticated state that we do not constantly have to deal with danger & life-threatening situations.
Our natural instincts of ‘fight or flight’ have been made redundant by our cushy over-protected lifestyles that we are all privileged to lead.
This ‘fight or flight’ reaction served us very well when monsters roamed the world & we had to hunt just in order to provide food.
But nowadays we are a largely sedentary race that has everything at our finger tips – we are not very physical at all.
The things that now make us want to fight or fly are when people pull out of a side road without looking, or a colleague won’t shut up about her up & coming wedding when she should be working.
